I grumpily survey my Monster resume stats. Despite my diligent efforts (like updating resume every day to ensure high circulation), only 12 people have looked at my resume since I posted it six weeks ago. For a moment I’m afraid that I’m just not qualified, that my resume sucks, that I’ll never find another decent job again. As usual, my friends come to my rescue. It turns out I’m not alone. Several friends who are also using major job search engines have the same complaints, and my friend Celeste, who recently found a high paying job working in marketing, has a solution.

“Potential employers get lost sifting through resumes on the bigger sites. It’s a better idea to find a job board that plays up to your individual skills. The employers who go to that site obviously value your skill above all, and are probably willing to pay for it.”

Apparently more and more people have the same idea as Celeste. Specialized, or ’boutique’, job boards are a growing trend.

However, these are the least effective methods of getting into the career of your dreams.

This method has advantages for both employers and employees; the employer saves on advertising and is likely to get a better match for the job than if he’d placed an ad. And the potential employee has the advantage of being able to ask her friend for the lowdown on the company. You can ask the type of question which would be inappropriate at an interview, but which might reveal crucial information which could influence your decision. You can spend as much time as you like asking about every aspect of the job and if you forget anything, you can ring your friend with additional questions. Look out for local networking events as well, as these will give you the opportunity to meet new contacts fact to face and build rapport, an important step in your job search strategy.

Job Search Strategies – Are You Committing Career Suicide?

We humans periodically stop and take stock of many parts of our lives – and one that frequently gets reevaluated is our career (or, if we’re not lucky, our job). Most of us spend a huge portion of our waking hours at work yet haven’t given what we do much thought since we landed our first jobs.

And, if you have held the same job since graduation, you may be living out the dream of your 18 or 21 year old self. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t trust my career to the decisions of even the world’s best teenager.

There are many ways at looking at work or careers, there is the old way exemplified by T.S. Eliot who said “For us, there is only the trying. The rest is not our business.” A more modern take on the subject comes from Timothy Ferris’ book “The 4-Hour Workweek” where he says “I won’t ask you to choose between enjoyment today and money later. I believe you can have both now. The goal is fun and profit.”

You need to decide whether you want to live your life according to T.S, Eliot or Timothy Ferris. I know what I would choose.

If you think you may be in a job or career that is not the one best suited to the life you want to live,rate your current position based on the following criteria, using a scale of one to ten (lowest to highest). 1 is absolutely terrible and 10 is perfect – and the job doesn’t exist that gets all 10′s.

1. What opportunities do I have for growth?

2. What opportunities are there for the day-to-day challenges that I cherish?

3. How much opportunity do I have to interact with others, do long range or strategic planning, write, think, get out in the field, or do whatever else it is that turns me on?

4. Is the corporate culture one that I am comfortable with?

Your answers to these questions will give you some telling insight into which of the following applies to you:

o You can probably use negotiating techniques to make your current position meet all your criteria without making a move.

o You’re probably very unhappy where you are and should be putting out feelers shortly so you can make a move within a short time.

o You should begin to consider your options. Unless you can make major changes where you are you probably won’t ever be satisfied there.

o Now is the time to make a move – you’re committing career suicide!

Preparation is Key When You Prepare For a Job Interview!

Before you apply for any position ask for a copy of the job description for the particular position for which you are interested. If you do not meet the minimum requirements or experience for the position being offered call the company and inquire if your experience and skills would be considered if you do apply. Some companies will not waiver from their stated requirements. Others may accept limited or alternative experience.

Today, with the vast information on the Internet, it is almost impossible not to find a great amount of information about any organization. A few basis facts you should know before you interview is the correct name of the company, who owns it, and how it operates. Applicants are not expected to know everything about a company but a bit of accurate information mentioned during an interview speaks loudly that you have “done your homework” and that you are very interested in joining the organization.

If you have a computer, input the company’s name into a search engine. Most companies have a website that you can check out. You will undoubtedly find a wealth of information. Research what issues the company is facing. Check the financial status of the company. Is the company profitable, how long has it been in operation, have there been any recent layoffs and why? Has the company grown over the years or is it struggling? Search for news stories connected to the company. You will probably find recent information related to projects, promotions, and general data about the workings of the organization. All that information can help you to decide if that is where you want to hang your hat!

If you do not have a computer you can still request financial reports, advertising material, brochures and publicity from the company itself.
